The Executive Governor of Abia State, His Excellency Okezie Victor Ikpeazu (Ph.D), has officially performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the rehabilitation of the Ariaria Water Scheme in Aba the economic hub of the South East Nigeria. This is part of the United State Agency for International Development Effective Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Services (USAID E-WASH) Program intervention on ensuring access to sustainable urban water and sanitation services in Nigeria’s cites in five states: Abia, Delta, Imo, Niger, and Taraba. This epoch making event in collaboration with the Abia State Government is taking place after nearly 20 years of the scheme being inoperative. The Governor was represented by the State Commissioner for Works Barr. Chiedozie Bob Ogu. The event which took place on Friday,20th August 2021,also had in attendance the Chairmen of Aba North and Aba South Local Government Areas, Board Members of Abia State Water and Sewage Corporation (AbSWSC), The Aba Landlords Association, USAID E-WASH State Team, National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS), Youth Leaders, Women Leaders and Staff & Management of AbSWSC. Led by the MD/CEO, Engr. Leo Ogbonna. On conclusion of this rehabilitation, the scheme is expected to serve portable drinking Water to five Local Governments of the State namely- Aba North, Aba South, Obingwa, Ugwunagbo and Osisioma. The E-WASH program is a four-year Urban Water Sector Reform Project which has made the water sector in Abia State to be investment ready. The Program intervention has enabled the establishment of a State Water Policy, upgrade of the existing Water Law, capacity building for its work force for sustainability and moving the sector forward.
