
COMMISSIONING AND OFFICIAL HANDOVER CEREMONY OF OFEME REGIONAL WATER SCHEME.
The Ofeme Regional Water Scheme was officially handed over to Abia State Water and Sewage Corporation (AbSWSC) by the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR) on 27th October, 2021 during a ceremony held in Ofeme Community in Afugiri in Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State in Nigeria.
The Water Scheme consists of 500metres cube ground tank, 200metres cube overhead tank, 10 boreholes with 5.5hp pumps each, 500 solar panels, 100kva generator, 14km of Water mains trunk line, serving the three autonomous Communities of Ofeme Ancient Kingdom. It is expected to serve the entire Ohuhu Community in Umuahia South Local Government Area with complete reticulation on completion of 30km.
As part of the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria’s intervention in the Water Sector through the Federal Ministry of Water Resources (FMWR), the Ofeme Regional Water Scheme was attracted to the community by the former Minister of Trade and Investment; Hon. Okechukwu Enelama who coincidentally hails from Ofeme.
The Commissioning and the Official Handover Ceremony had in attendance, Engr. Ebuka Amanueke of the FMWR who represented the Hon. Minister of Water Resources, Engr. Suleiman Adamu.
Also present at the occasion was the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Public Utilities and Water Resources (MoPU & WR), Engr. Chika Friday who thanked the FG and FMWR for establishing the Ofeme Regional Water Scheme in Abia State noting that it is a high breed project which is very important to the Abia State Government and the good people of Ofeme.
Hon. Okechukwu Enelama was ably represented by Hon. Chilaka Chukwu who noted also that the Water scheme is the first of its kind in the whole of South East Nigeria.
The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of AbSWSC., Engr. Leo Chiemela Ogbonna in his response during the handover appreciated the Former Minister and the FG for implementing the project as designed. He emphasized on the importance of the sustainability of the Water Scheme assuring the Ohuhu Community that the Abia State Government will ensure the Water Scheme is sustained in synergy with the community’s support.
The ceremony also had in attendance Engr. Nandom Godwin, the Resident Engineer, Jidadu Nigeria Ltd. (Contractors); Chief Obinna Aguocha, the President General, Ohuhu Development Federation; High Chief Prince Onu (Secretary General, Ohuhu Development Federation); Engr. Nwabueze Akobundu, a Water Engineer from the host Community, some management staff of MoPU&WR. and AbSWSC. amongst other dignitaries.
